UNC Charlotte Moves into N.C. Research Campus

With its recent move into the N.C. Research Campus Core Laboratory Building, UNC Charlotte permanently staked its claim to the scientific collaboration taking place in Kannapolis. Cory Brouwer, who joined the University last month, will oversee UNC Charlotte’s scientific research at the N.C. Research Campus as director of bioinformatics services.

Bioinformatics is the application of statistics and computer science to the field of molecular biology. University and N.C. Research Campus leaders believe bioinformatics will be a key growth area for the biotechnology industry in the region.

Brouwer holds a doctorate in molecular biology from Iowa State University and worked for the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, heading a computational sciences group in the United Kingdom. In addition to UNC Charlotte, six other UNC system schools have a presence at the N.C. Research Campus. University researchers will collaborate with scientists from these other institutions and private industry to analyze data generated by work at the research campus.

The Charlotte Research Institute also is sharing new office space in Kannapolis with the University’s Bioinformatics Research Center.
