<< BackAlumnus to Lead University’s Veterans Outreach Program
Logan Cason has been named coordinator for the Veterans Students Outreach Program, which is part of the Dean of Students Office in the Division for Student Affairs. In heading this new initiative, Cason will be an advocate, liaison, advisor and counselor for student-veterans as well as students serving in the military.
“The position was created as a response to the increase in veteran-students,” said Cason. “With the new post-9/11 GI Bill that was unveiled in 2009, the prospect of pursuing a degree became a greater possibility for veterans. Also, with so many National Guard and military reserve units being deployed, more service members are eligible for the greater benefits offered through the bill.”
Cason enlisted in the U.S. Army following graduation from Vance High School in 2001. He was a cavalry scout with the 16th Cavalry Regiment at Fort Knox, Ky. After completing his tour of duty, he enrolled at UNC Charlotte and earned a bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in history. During the 2007-08 academic year, he was an exchange student at the University of Kent in England.
According to Cason, the program goals include modifying the admissions application to track new veteran-students, streamline the process to convert military training into transfer credit hours and organize veteran-themed events on campus, such as a Veterans Day observance. He eventually plans to launch a program for veteran faculty and staff members to mentor veteran-students.
